Reality TV for people who hate reality TV

    12/08/2011

I HATE reality TV; I think it's one of the reasons for so many problems in our society - the dumbing down of the spoint and dummer generation is what the media want and the spoilt and dummer generation lap up the likes of Masterchef, Britain's Got Talent and The Block as if it was the elixir of life.

You people really need to GET a life and get off the rubbish reality that gets pumped out on the commercial channels all over the world.

End of rant - I love reality TV - the kind espoused by Kevin McClound and the brilliant production team behind Grand Designs. In stark contrast to the drivel and talentless participants of commercial reality TV here we have quality programming, with an intelligent and insightful host critiquing REAL effort from those whose attention span is longer than the 5 nanoseconds it takes to put some fru fru meal together...

OK, rant continues - LONG may this programme continue so we can see the monstrous gap between quality and utter tripe.

    I felt conned...

    24/09/2010

Here's a summary of this book in one sentence: if you're a subject matter expert you can think without thinking. There, now you know no need to buy the book. I really can't recommend this to anyone, so you won't need to think about buying this book...
  • Best diving adventure story

    08/08/2010

I consider this to be the best non Courtney/Ballantyne book by Wilbur Smith. For me at least my fastest page turner, for any novel - as ever it's so easy to find yourself there, as Harry Fletcher, watching it all unfold in painstaking detail.

The best Wilbur Smith Africa novel

    05/08/2010

This book will leave you breathless, a story of true grit and determination told in typical Smith style with Africa as its backdrop and with a level of detail and narrative that few authors can match. If you read nothing else by Wilbur Smith read this.

    Story of a true genius

    08/08/2010

G.H. Hardy, one of the most prominent mathemaricians of the 20th century said his greatest achievement was the discovery of Srinivasa Ramanujan. We went further to rank Ramanujan 100 in a pure talent scale of 0 to 100 where he put himself on 25, Littlewood, a contemporary, on 30 and David Hilbert on 80. Such was the true genius of Ramanujan. He died age 32, having spent a few brief years with Hardy at Cambridge. This books recounts that period and Ramanujan's earlier life. For anyone with an interest in mathematics, in particular pure mathematics, this is a must read. It does leave you wanting a different ending, his contribution to mathematics is unmatched, how much further would we be had he lived longer.

A ripping yarn about the solving of one of math's greatest puzzles

    05/08/2010

I'm a big fan of Simon Singh, I have many of his books and it was this one that introduced me to him. I bought this after I saw a list of the all time best maths books in the London Times. The book tells the story of how Andrew Wiles, a UK mathematician, cracked a centuries old puzzle. You don't need any understanding of maths to really appreciate Wiles' achievement and pages will turn fast once you get into this book. Thoroughly recommended.

Life of the greatest mathematical genius of all time

    19/05/2011

If you love maths and the history of maths you have to read this book. How much further would we be ahead had Ramanujan not died so early.
  • Clarkson or red squirrels?

    22/10/2010

I think Clarkson's great - he's a bloke's bloke. But I actually think red squirrels are even better, so that's why I bought this book. An absurd reason, but hey, it's a book about the absurd and it does it really well in true Clarkson style. If you don't have volumes 1 to 3, start with this one, volume 4 and work back.
  • On my top 10 film list of all time

    15/12/2011

It would be up there as number 1, if it wasn't for the ending, which disappoints a little. However everything up to that point is brilliant. And the real star of the show is, LA itself. This film does a great job of summing that city up...

Fast forward back to the 80's...

    26/06/2011

For me there's nothing like 80's music, and stuff like this gets me reminiscing. What's great about this is not only is it so good, it's also home grown, DJ's Lionel Towers and Xavier Bacash hailing from Melbourne. Ranging from the incredibly infectious Jona Vark, through Piper's Song, Breakaway and Giglamesh itself, it's all good here.
So who does this remind me of; I can find elements of A-Ha, Tears For Fears, Alphaville and New Order in many of the tracks - nothing wrong with that!
That said there's a very fresh and original feel to the whole album, a definite 10 out of 10 from me.

Incredible book about an amazing athlete

    24/04/2012

It's hard to believe what Chrissie Wellington achieved in the space of 5 short years in the toughest of endurance sports. For those who don't know - SPOILER ALERT - she achieved nothing short of complete domination in that time, being unbeaten in the 13 Ironman events she competed in, including 4 world championships at Kona, considered to be the toughest course of all, and is the current world record holder across 3 different formats.

The mental strength of the woman is hard to imagine, particularly if you haven't competed in triathlons (at any distance), and especially given the frequent obstacles put in her way including significant injuries and illness, any of which would ground lesser mortals from even going out of the house.

It's a clich to say but this book is a testament to mind over matter and shear utter determination to win in the face of any adversity life might throw at you. Its a fantastic read, I found it hard to put down over the very few short nights I read the book (unusually quick for me). I gained a lot from this book and Im grateful to her for imparting her life story to date. I felt as if Id gained a friend so open and intimate was the narrative and there was a sense of loss at the end; I wanted the book to go on for so much longer and it seems likely we may not see Chrissie compete in Ironman again.
