Synopsis

One of Mark Twain's most obscure titles is now available in a new gift edition. When the Civil War broke out in 1861 Twain travelled across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. These travels provided the material for The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, first published in the New York Saturday Press in 1865.It retells a story Twain heard from a bartender in the City of Angels, California, about the hopeless gambler and con artist Jim Smiley. Discovering a copy of this story in French, Twain translated it, word-for-word, into English, keeping the French grammar structure and ending with the note: "thus is my story, the distorted French eye."
