The Art And Science Of Handwriting

Synopsis

Analyzing a discipline we take very much for granted, this book considers handwriting in its scientific and artistic contexts and reflects a decade's work in both education and hospital settings. The author evaluates contributions to the discipline from the fifteenth century up to the present day, by doctors, writing masters and typographers. She argues that no one method or model has all the answers to handwriting problems and that older research, not always reported, had sometimes more to offer than many modern studies. Topics covered include: hand and pen-hold analysis, the effects of teachers' handwriting on the reproduction of handwriting, children's signatures, writers cramp, handwriting as an indicator of stress and the psychology of calligraphy.
