  • Great Book

    13/10/2010

I just finished reading this book and thoroughly enjoyed it.
The author has done a great job compiling a list of very humorous use and misuse of the English language. The illustrations and pictures are also funny. I particularly enjoyed several humorous student essays and exam bloopers. An enjoyable read with something for everyone and definitely worth a look on your Christmas shopping list.

[The following story appeared in The Canberra Times on 4 November 2010.]

    Story by Lyn Mills

Troy Simpson has a good eye for the written mistake. So good, in fact, he's found that his research made for a good little book for a great big giggle.

The National Library of Australia has published Funny English just in time for the Christmas buying spree as it's ideal for some who'll enjoy the howlers, the hilarious and humbling mistakes.

The books categories are predictable, such as the classroom and the press. But for a good laugh you can't go past what kids think they hear and then write. Did you think the Lord's Prayer was about Harold as in "Harold be Thy Name" when you were trying to fit in at Sunday school?

[The Minister for Education and Training] Andrew Barr did the book launch thing with some good self-deprecating moments we love to hear. Barr did question its author Troy Simpson as to why he was chosen to launch the book and made us all remember the spoken words that can slip out so easily. Particularly from the master of oratory origami, George W. Bush, who had so much difficulty with brain and tongue coordination. Sheridan's Mrs Malaprop, the doyenne of linguistic disaster, would get a good laugh as well as you out of Funny English.

  • Funny Indeed!

The book contains some well researched and funny content indeed! It is a very easy read which is light and humorous. Could be used as a very good training tool for those of us with young children. Illustrations support the themes of the text which is presented in a dynamic way.

There's an old adage in writing, which is "show, don't tell". Mr Simpson, don't try and tell me your book is funny. I'll know it's funny when I laugh at something. Unfortunately, this is the least funny heap of garbage I've read in a long time. Think "S*** My Dad Says" and "Kids Say The Darnedest Things" combined.
