Fitzgerald calls Isabel's famous lament in the third act of the Alcalde a speech worthy of the Greek Antigone, while his sonnets are among the best that Spain can show. ?yCalderon has been at times extravagantly praised, but at others violently attacked, nor is he without his deficiencies and blemishes. He lacks the broad humanity of Cervantes and_Lope, he lacks a sense of humour. He is at times over-fond of .spectacular effect, and indulges in conceits which appeal to the intellect rather than to the heart, but it is at his greatest that a man should be j udged, and his work both in volume and in quality secure to him a place among the immortals.
