Billabong Boy

Synopsis

This is Arron's story, from a boy who loved to explore his local billabong to international award-winning speaker, and his struggles to keep balanced while being an inspiration to those around him. As winner of the 2006 United Nations Individual Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment and the 2007 Prime Minister's Environmentalist of the Year Award, Arron believes that young people are an integral part of the debate. Working closely with his father, Richard, through their Kids Teaching Kids programme, he is passionate about creating a community of learners - a community that inspires young people and gives them the skills to be the leaders of tomorrow.

  • From caring comes courage

A bargain: two books in one! Arron combines a terrific memoir with the motivations behind his passion for the environment and there is a lot for any reader to still learn about the importance of environmental action in this book. However, it's the story of his personal challenges and achievements that is the glue for the story. The honest and objective retelling of his journey reminds readers that 'ordinary people can do extraordinary things'. Arron manifests, thousands of years later, the important words of Lao Tzu. "At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want." This book will inspire all who read it.

  • More than meets the eye

    14/10/2010

Arron's story leaves the reader energized. He could be the boy next door or that guy at the pub that every girl has a crush on yet he is so much more. Though various life experiences he has remained true to his passion and as a result has achieved amazing things not only for himself but also inspiring a whole generation of Australian school kids. So you think his story would be filled with only superlatives. Arron shares warts and all making this book inspiring because it shows that he is no different to you or me. Adding comments from his father adds a very personal aspect to the book. Everyone should have this book on their shelves and whenever you feel life is getting you down open it up and read what is possible if you believe.

  • Inspiring and uplifting

    25/09/2010

I read Billabong Boy in two nights, not wanting to put it down as it was a pleasure to read. Arron is honest about the opportunities and the challenges he has confronted in trying to keep a business going that focuses on kids teaching kids in a natural resources management sector that is not flush with cash. Like the Australian River Restoration Centre (www.arrc.com.au), Arrons work is about supporting people, and I am inspired to read about what he has achieved. Arron has recieved a number of well-deserved rewards, but for me, what came through in the book was how much he valued the conversations with kids, and how much he acknowledges the importance of having friends and family to help him realise his dreams. I recommend this book as an inspiring read, and one that will lift your spirits and remind you about why we care about the environment in which we live.

    'Billabong Boy' is most enlightening.
It shows the difficulties a family faced and how the strength of family supported an incredible young man through enormous highs and lows in his extraordinary drive whilst working with young people. It is a most inspiring book and I would recommend it to all.

Arron through this book has shown incredible maturity from a young age to realise that without a healthy environment we have nothing.
His determination and enthusiasm to share his knowledge with younger generations must be applauded.Arron sets an outstanding example in showing Australians of all ages that the survival of our river systems and its dependent environment is in our hands.

Arron Wood's biography is inspiring. Not only does it recount public awards but the personal ones too. Arron is a warrior in so many ways, and the decision to share the personal battles with anxiety makes this an even more powerful reading experience. Arron serves as a role model for his generation, for educators, and all those fighting for the environment. Most of all, he shares with us his appreciation of his wonderfully supportive family. His achievements are outstanding.
