Africa, Football And Fifa: Politics, Colonialism And Resistance

Synopsis

An examination of how the institutions of African football (soccer) leagues are affected by the legacy of European colonialism and current realities of economic disparities between First and Third World countries. Darby (sociology of sport, Liverpool Hope University College, UK) focuses on the intra-institutional conflicts within the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), telling the story of the development of power within the international body. Beginning with an explanation of how Europe diffused football into its African colonies, Darby looks at the development of FIFA since 1945 and examines how Europeans held all of the powerful offices within FIFA until that hegemony was broken with the ascendancy of Brazilian Joao Havelange to the presidency in 1974. Resulting developments have led to an increasing importance of the Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) within FIFA, but the recent announcement of the retirement of Havelange has led to uncertainty in the direction of the role of African football within FIFA.
